Arizona group files 2020 marijuana legalization initiative

August 9, 2019

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona voters may get a chance to decide again next year whether to legalize recreational marijuana.

Legalization advocates said Friday they’ve filed paperwork with the Arizona Secretary of State to put the question before voters in 2020.

They’ll need to collect at least 240,000 signatures from registered voters to qualify for the ballot.

Spokeswoman Stacy Pearson says advocates have learned from a failed effort in 2016, when a legalization initiative went down in a 51-49 vote.

The 2020 initiative would allow adults 21 and older to have up to one ounce of marijuana. Smoking in public places would be prohibited.

The initiative also would allow people to seal past criminal records for low-level marijuana convictions.
