BLOOMFIELD — Services for Donald “Shorty” Jessen, 96, Bloomfield, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. The Rev. Glen Emery will officiate with burial in Bloomfield City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4996, American Legion Post 249 and Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
He died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Donald John Jessen, son of John and Frieda (Steineke) Jessen, was born Oct. 28, 1922, at Bloomfield. He was baptized at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bloomfield and later confirmed in 1943. Donald served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Thelma Bumann on May 29, 1949, at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. They were blessed with two sons, Steven and Daniel.
Donald started farming at a young age and continued until he retired. He was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church and served in several church offices, including as usher, on the parochial school board and finance committee. Donald enjoyed woodworking, reading, being a farmer and caring for his family.
Donald leaves to mourn his spouse, Thelma; sons Steven (Michelle) and Daniel; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and sisters Arlene Barnes, Helen McCoy, Janet (Morris) Gold and Mary (Tom) Trenhaile.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Herb, Lyle, Jack and Gene; sisters Marjorie Barnes, Joan Case and Alyce Sphon; and other relatives and friends.
