STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) _ Kelly Mazzante scored 32 points, breaking a 17-year-old Big Ten single-season scoring record, to lead Penn State to a 96-79 victory Sunday night over Florida International in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
With 6:46 left, Mazzante made a 25-foot 3-pointer to give the fourth-seeded Lady Lions (23-11) an 87-69 lead and break the scoring mark set in 1985 by Northwestern’s Anucha Browne. The sophomore, a second-team All-American, has scored 857 points this season _ two more than Browne’s record.
Penn State had his biggest offensive showing of the season, topping a 95-point effort at Ohio State on Feb. 3.
Mazzante played well at both ends, making steals and hitting 3-pointers as the shot clock expired. When FIU (27-6) used a 10-0 run to pull within 68-61 with 11:05 left, Mazzante responded with a pair of 3-pointers _ one from each wing _ to put Penn State back up 76-63.
Freshman Tanisha Wright scored a career-high 26 points for Penn State, and freshman Jess Strom had a career-high 14 assists. Jessica Brungo had 11 points.
Cormisha Cotton had 20 points for the Golden Panthers, Anita Heller scored 16, and Cheryl Moody and Gergana Slavtcheva each had 14.
The Lady Lions led 55-41 at halftime, scoring their most points in the first half this season and the most allowed by FIU. Penn State made 22 of 38 shots in the first half (57.9 percent), while the Panthers hit just 13 of 32 (40.6 percent).
