Firefighter Dies in Mich. Blaze

March 4, 2000

FRASER, Mich. (AP) _ A possible arson fire at an apartment complex killed a firefighter and a resident early Saturday, authorities said.

Fraser volunteer firefighter David Sutton, 27, died trying to put out the fire at the O’Brien Co-Op Apartments in suburban Detroit where a resident, whose name was not immediately known, also died, police said.

A second firefighter, Robert Kokko, 32, was listed in serious condition in the University of Michigan Medical Center’s burn unit.

Authorities responded to a garage fire at 2:46 a.m., about 45 minutes before being told another fire had broken out at the Woodside Manor Apartments. A report then surfaced that smoke had been spotted at the nearby Co-Op Apartments, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the fires were related. Arson was suspected at the Co-Op complex, but authorities had not yet pinpointed the cause.

Another fire, also believed to be arson, swept through Woodside Manor on Friday morning, when two residents suffered smoke inhalation.
