Officials identify Bozeman officer who shot and killed man

January 8, 2019

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Montana police have released the name of the Bozeman police officer who shot and killed a man last week after responding to an assault call.

The Bozeman Police Department says Sgt. Ben Green is a 12-year veteran of the department. It says Green shot and killed 31-year-old Eric D. Sauerhagen early Friday morning after Sauerhagen, armed with a hatchet and a handgun, came at officers during an assault call.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports Green remains on paid administrative leave while the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office investigate the shooting.

Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert said Green would face a hearing to determine whether shooting Sauerhagen was justified.
