Darland Wins Second USAC Silver Crown Championship
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ David Darland won his second consecutive Silver Crown Championship on Saturday after top finisher George Snider’s car was disqualified for being too light.
After pulling into victory lane, Snider’s car was weighed and found to be six pounds short of the 1,500-pound minimum, said Dick Jordan, a U.S. Auto Club race spokesman.
``He drove a great race, but the rules are the rules,″ Jordan said.
Snider led the last 36 laps of the 100-lap race, but his disqualification gave the victory and $9,000 top prize to Darland, who had placed second.
The disqualification gave second place to Chuck Gurney, followed by Kenny Irwin, Jr., in third, Robby Flock in fourth and Andy Michner in fifth.
The 16th annual race _ known as A.J. Foyt’s Hulman Hundred _ was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds after a one-day rain delay.
