Hearings Set For Homicide Suspects

January 12, 2019

SCRANTON Hearings set for pair in killing Two of the three defendants charged with the slaying of a confidential informant face a preliminary hearing on Feb. 4. Cornelius Mapson and a co-defendant, Kevin Weeks, are charged in connection with the April 20 death of 24-year-old Nina Gatto of Scranton. Police say Mapson, 33, of Jenkins Twp., injected Gatto with fentanyl, then suffocated her to prevent her from testifying against him in a drug case. Weeks, 25, of Scranton, and a third defendant, Melinda Palermo, 38, of Jenkins Twp., are accused of assisting in the crime. Palermo waived all charges in June, sending her case to a possible trial. Hearings for Mapson and Weeks had been on hold while Mapson appealed a Lackawanna County judge’s ruling that barred attorney Curt Parkins from representing him because Parkins previously worked in the same law firm as attorney Paul Walker, who previously represented Gatto. The state Superior Court recently declined to hear the appeal. Hearings for Mapson and Weeks are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Paul Keeler. —TERRIE MORGAN-BESECKER
