STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Jeff Weaver set an NCAA postseason record with 21 strikeouts and pitched a three-hitter as Fresno State beat Texas A&M in the first round of the West Regional.

Weaver (11-5), a sophomore, broke the NCAA postseason record of 20 strikeouts by Ohio State’s Steve Arlin in a 15-inning game in 1965. The previous record for a nine-inning game was 19, by Arizona State’s Eddie Bane in 1973.

Weaver, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, outpitched Matt Blank (7-4), who allowed eight hits.

Fresno State (38-26) scored its only runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Hook and a two-out infield single by Mike Williams.

Texas A&M is 39-21.

Fresno State’s Josh Hannah singled in the first inning to extend his school-record hitting streak to 34 games.


Virginia Tech 3, Southern California 2

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) _ Matt Reynolds hit his second solo homer of the game in the ninth inning to give Virginia Tech a victory over Southern California in the opening round of the South II regional.

Reynolds’ homer chased Scott Henderson (8-4), who came up short in a pitcher’s duel with Virginia Tech’s Denny Wagner.

Wagner (10-4) needed 140 pitches to throw his sixth complete game. He allowed eight hits and retired the last two USC batters after giving up a double and a walk with one out in the ninth.

Reynolds’ first homer of the game gave Virginia Tech a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. USC went ahead 2-1 lead in the fifth on a solo homer by Jeremy Freitas and an RBI single by Marc Mirizzi.

The Hokies tied it in the sixth when Barry Gauch’s sacrifice fly scored Eric Shiflett.

Tennessee 5, Ohio 2

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Pitcher Ken Folkers produced on the mound and at the plate, leading Tennessee past Ohio in a Midwest Regional opener.

He 10 hits, but pitched out of most jams while stranding 12 Bobcats.

Folkers (7-3) seemed to get stronger in the later innings, recording five of his 10 strikeouts from the fifth through eighth.

Joe Abell and Clark Odom each recorded an out in relief in the ninth for the Volunteers (42-17) to close out the win.

Folkers helped with his bat in the fifth, putting the Volunteers ahead with a two-run, bases-loaded single to make it 3-2.

Bobcats starter Bobby Sismondo (11-2) struck out seven but took the loss as Ohio U fell to 43-17.

Arizona St. 10, Fla. International 2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Dan McKinley’s two-run double _ part of a record-tying performance _ broke open a close game, Arizona State pulled away in its Atlantic Regional opener.

McKinley, who leads the Sun Devils in six offensive categories, went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Three of his hits were doubles, which tied a NCAA mark last attained in 1990.

The Golden Panthers pulled to 2-1 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Tony Diaz.

The Sun Devils (37-20) countered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning on four hits to wrest control of the game.

Willie Bloomquist went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs for Arizona State. He showed his speed by scoring from second on a routine infield ground ball in the sixth to make it 8-1.

ASU’s Ryan Mills (6-3) went seven strong innings, striking out four and walking two to improve to 6-3.

Raul Garcia (11-2) got the loss as FIU fell to 42-20.
