TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Gary Coston kicked three field goals and freshman tailback Art Greathouse scored on a 43-yard run as 16th-ranked Arizona beat Oregon State 23-12 in a Pacific-10 Conference football game Saturday night.
Greathouse’s touchdown with 1:52 remaining capped a 46-yard drive in two plays that thwarted a late Oregon State threat and sealed the victory for the Wildcats, now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Beavers, a 24-point underdog, had closed to within 16-12 with 2:30 left on Dowell Williams’ 1-yard run to cap a 73-yard drive. Oregon State tried a two-point conversion pass, but it failed.
Coston’s 32-yard field goal with 9:29 to play in the third quarter was his 12th straight this season, tying a school record set by Max Zendejas in 1984.
The field goal capped a 72-yard drive that started at Arizona’s 10-yard line to start the second half.
Coston also has field goals of 38 and 30 yards in the first half as Arizona built a 13-3 lead.
Arizona had opened the scoring on its first possession as quarterback Alfred Jenkins lateralled to flanker Derek Hill, who threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to split end Jon Horton.
Oregon State, 1-5 overall and 1-3 in Pac-10 play, got a 32-yard field goal from Marty Breen 13 seconds before halftime and a 40-yarder with 6:10 left in the third quarter made it 16-6.
Erik Wilhelm, the Beavers’ sophomore left-handed quarterback who leads the league in passing, competed 35 of 56 attempts for 347 yards with no inteceptions.
Jenkins was 9-of-18 for 84 yards and one pass picked off.
Arizona’s David Adams rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries while Greathouse had 65 yards on seven carries.
