Father Who Fractured Baby’s Skull Gets 3 Years; Vasectomy Recommended

November 21, 1990

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) _ A judge recommended that a man get a vasectomy and sentenced him to three years in prison for fracturing his baby’s skull because the infant wouldn’t stop crying.

Stephen Anthony Judd, 19, pleaded no contest Tuesday to one count of aggravated child abuse for dropping his son on his head on a table.

″If it was left up to me, I’d give you 15 years in prison. Anyone who could do that to a 7-week-old baby deserves no mercy,″ said Circuit Judge Giles P. Lewis, who also ordered five years’ probation.

″I don’t have the authority to order a vasectomy, but I’d think long and hard about it if I were you, son,″ Lewis said.

The maximum penalty for aggravated child abuse is 15 years in prison, but sentencing guidelines called for a term of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years, said Assistant State Attorney Howard Maltz. Because of prison overcrowding, Judd probably will serve about a third of the term, Maltz said.
