Mom seeks autopsy for son who died after being in custody
PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — The mother of a man who died after being in police custody says she is seeking an independent autopsy.
The Record reports Patrice King told a packed Paterson city council meeting Tuesday night that she hoped to get results back before Jameek Lowery’s funeral on Friday.
Passaic County authorities haven’t released a cause of death for Lowery. He recorded a frantic video at a police station on Jan. 5 saying he had taken the drug ecstasy and was paranoid.
He wound up unresponsive while being taken by police to the hospital and died two days later.
The county prosecutor’s office has said Lowery was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital and that he had to be restrained during the trip by officers who used “physical force and compliance holds.”
