Growing awareness sparks media interest in Havasu
Hot on the heels of a BBC documentary that aired in September, C-SPAN’s 2018 Cities Tour will begin filming in Havasu next week.
According to Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitors Bureau President Terence Concannon, people are becoming more aware of Havasu as a city, as well as a travel destination, and national media outlets are noticing.
“It’s clear that Lake Havasu is gaining positive awareness worldwide,” Concannon said. “We work hard to tell Havasu’s story and we’re gratified to see our community showcased for its history, its people and its appeal as a vacation destination.”
C-SPAN’s 2018 Cities Tour will bring film crews to Havasu on Monday and tour the city, learn its history and meet local author and historian Rick Kingsbury.
According to CVB Director of Event Marketing Jackie Leatherman, Univision will also film in Havasu next week.
“Any time we get a chance to feature our city in a national broadcast, to be viewed by millions, is a fantastic opportunity,” Concannon said. “C-SPAN came to us initially, and we coordinated with them in what activities are available here. We’ve helped them in every way we possibly could. They wanted to have a kick-off in a location that represents the city, and it’s going to take place beneath the London Bridge.”
Lake Havasu City Mayor Mark Nexsen is expected to meet with C-Span officials beneath the bridge Monday morning, where he will issue a proclamation. Speakers will also include Concannon and C-SPAN Coordinating Producer Debbie Lamb.
C-SPAN is only the latest in a list of major media outlets to film in Havasu, following the BBC, the Food Network, Fox News.
According to Nexsen, Havasu is continuing to gain recognition not only as a travel destination, but as a community.
“When you think about all of the various surveys that have been published – saying that Havasu is one of the best places to retire, one of the best places to fish and one of America’s Best Communities, I think people are curious as to what Havasu is about,” Nexsen said. “They’re beginning to recognize us as an oasis in the desert.”w
Nexsen will host a proclamation beneath the London Bridge from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 8.
C-SPAN will film Oct. 7-10. Segments featuring Havasu are scheduled to air Nov. 3-4 on C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3.
