Lightning strike causes fire at flower shop
HUNTINGTON — A lightning strike during a thunderstorm caused a fire to break out Friday afternoon at a flower shop in the 6200 block of East Pea Ridge Road in Huntington.
According to John Mayo, who owns Designs by DJ with his wife, the roof of the business caught fire around 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
Mayo said the rest of the house suffered some water damage, but there were no injuries.
The fire comes the day before Cabell Midland High School’s prom, and Mayo said some of the flowers for Saturday’s dance had to be moved to Spurlock’s Flowers and Greenhouses, which allowed use of storage space.
Mayo said they are making arrangements with customers to pick up flowers.
“It’s amazing how people pull together,” Mayo said. “We really appreciate everything everyone has done for us.”
