Man badly hurt in bar shooting

A man was seriously injured early Friday in a shooting at a Fort Wayne bar. 

Police were called about 4 a.m. to State Grill, 1210 E. State Blvd., where they found the man in a rear parking lot. It’s not clear how many times he was shot, but Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Michael Joyner said he was taken to a hospital in serious condition. 

Investigators have no suspect information, and a motive for the shooting has not been determined, Joyner said in an email.

Ohio slaying fugitive arrested

A man wanted in connection with the Sept. 20 killing of a Cecil, Ohio, man was arrested Friday in Kentucky.

Zane C. Bartley, 32, was found near Louisa, Kentucky, by U.S. marshals and local authorities, Paulding County Sheriff Jason K. Landers said in a statement.

Bartley is wanted in Ohio on one count of complicity to aggravated murder and one count of aggravated burglary in connection with the slaying of Philip Koenn, who was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds at his home.

Marcella C. Wright, 29, was with Bartley, Landers said. She has an unrelated warrant charging possession of methamphetamine and is also to be extradited.

On Sept. 21, police arrested Michael Kent Loop, 32, of Defiance, Ohio, on a felony count of murder related to the case, the sheriff has said. 

Ex-college official to plead guilty

A former high-ranking Huntington University official charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly fondling a man will plead guilty in December. 

Vincent D. Haupert, 50, invited the man to his home to celebrate the 21-year-old’s birthday, according to court documents. After the man went to bed in a spare bedroom July 31, Haupert came in, climbed into bed and fondled the man, a probable cause affidavit stated.  

Haupert had been the Christian university’s vice president for advancement. He resigned Aug. 7, and Huntington Superior Court records show a plea hearing is scheduled for Dec. 18.

Wet road factor in Noble crash

A Noble County woman was injured Friday morning in a crash in which she lost control of her car on a wet, icy road. 

Vicki Dekoninck, 60, of Avilla was driving east on DeKalb County Road 56 when she lost control, and her Buick Lucerne “rotated 180 degrees counter clockwise and went off the south side of the roadway” and struck a utility pole, according to a crash report from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. 

The vehicle was totaled, and Dekoninck complained of head and chest pain.
