Flood watch: Adams, Huntington, Wells, Mercer, Van Wert
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Adams, Huntington and Wells counties in Indiana and Mercer and Van Wert counties in Ohio.
The flood watch for the Indiana counties and Van Wert County is until 7 p.m. tonight, and the flood watch in Mercer County is through Friday morning, the weather service said in a statement.
Around an inch of rain is expected in the Indiana and Van Wert County watch area, with locally higher amounts possible, the statement said. It said the rain would be falling on generally frozen ground, causing rapid runoff into low areas, creeks, streams and rivers.
One-half to 1 1/2 inches of rain is expected in Mercer County, with locally higher amounts possible, the weather service said. It said this rain on top of already saturated ground may lead to additional flooding that could linger into early Friday.
A flood warning continues for the St. Joseph River below Montpelier, Ohio, until Tuesday afternoon, the weather service said.
At 9 a.m. Thursday the stage was 12.6 feet and rising; flood stage is 12 feet. The river is expected to crest near 13.8 feet around 1 a.m. Saturday and fall below flood stage around 3 p.m. Monday.
The crest compares to a crest of 13.4 feet in May 2011, the weather service said.
