State police: Faulty inspection contributed to fatal crash

June 15, 2019

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say an inadequate inspection contributed to the death of a trooper who was struck by a tire that dislodged from a logging truck on I-95.

Officials suspended the license of the mechanic at Timberland Trucking of Medway, who inspected the tractor-trailer 27 days before Detective Ben Campbell was killed. Campbell had stopped to assist a motorist who had spun out in the snow on April 3.

State Police Col. John Cote said the tractor-trailer didn’t get a “full and thorough inspection.” He also noted that a company that mounted tires a week later also failed to notice the faulty wheel assembly.

Cote said the mechanic’s suspension happened the week of the crash. Neither Timberland nor the truck owner returned calls. The district attorney is reviewing the matter.
