Slain Lawyer May Have Drug Links
TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) _ Gunmen killed an attorney in a barrage of gunfire as he left his office in this Mexican border city, newspapers reported Saturday.
Joaquin Baez Lugo, who was killed Friday, had links to the Arellano Felix drug gang, the newspaper accounts said.
The Mexico City dailies Reforma, Universal and La Jornada reported that Baez had represented suspected members of the Tijuana-based drug cartel, considered the most violent and one of the largest drug gangs in Mexico.
The local daily Frontera reported that two men were waiting for Baez as he got into his car and opened fire with automatic weapons. He was hit at least 35 times, the newspaper accounts said.
Some 350 murders have occurred so far this year in Tijuana, according to the weekly newspaper Zeta. Officials say most of those killings in this city of 1 million people are linked to drug trafficking.
