BOSTON (AP) _ Trevor Kidd posted his third consecutive shutout and the Carolina Hurricanes bolstered their late-season surge for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot with a 3-0 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday night.

Kidd, who has recorded all three of his shutouts on the road, stopped 27 shots and extended his club record scoreless string to 202:49. He turned aside 24 shots in a 1-0 win at Montreal Saturday and had 37 saves in a 4-0 victory at New Jersey last Wednesday.

Carolina moved two points behind Ottawa for eighth place, with both teams having seven games left.

Boston fell three points behind Washington, which tied Montreal 2-2 Monday night, for the final Eastern Conference playoff slot with home ice in the opening round.

Nelson Emerson and Sami Kapanen scored first-period goals 1:26 apart for the Hurricanes, who notched their fifth consecutive road win and are 6-1-1 in their last eight games overall. Gary Roberts added a third-period goal.

Emerson, positioned at the top right of the crease, redirected Keith Primeau’s shot from the point past Byron Dafoe to make it 1-0 at 10:40.

Kapanen slipped a wrist shot just inside the left post after taking a centering pass from Robert Kron at the left circle for his team-leading 26th goal at 12:06.

Roberts added his insurance goal with 9:13 to play.
