Top Seed Haarhuis Upset, El-Aynaoui, Schalken Reach Final
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco surprisingly reached the final of the Indonesian Open, upsetting top-seeded Dutchman Paul Haarhuis 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 Saturday.
In Sunday’s final, El Aynaoui will face fifth-seeded Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, who rallied to beat American Michael Joyce 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
After winning the first set against Haarhuis, El Aynaoui had a chance to end the match when he led the second-set tiebreaker 4-1. However, his impatience denied him the victory as the defending champion and world’s 18th-ranked player rallied.
But El Aynaoui easily won the third set to claim his second final berth in a week.
In a doubles semifinal, Americans Kent Kinnear and Dave Randall defeated the Spanish-Dutch pair of Emilio Sanches and Schalken 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
The winners will meet countrymen Rick Leach and Scott Melville in Sunday’s final. Leach and Melville won their semifinal Friday.
