Michael Lucid Awaits Return Of Out-Of-This-World Mom
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) _ Michael Lucid’s mom is out of this world _ but not for long.
Astronaut Shannon Lucid is finally about to return to Earth after setting a U.S. space endurance record with her six-month stay aboard Russia’s Mir station.
It was her fifth trip into orbit since Michael was 10, so excuse the 21-year-old Texas Tech student from Houston if he’s not that excited.
``It’s no big deal down there,″ he said. ``Everyone’s mom is an astronaut in Houston. Half the kids I went to school with had parents working for the space program.″
While she missed Michael’s 21st birthday and the 28th of daughter Kawai, Shannon Lucid soon will be on her way home. Shuttle Atlantis docked with Mir on Wednesday night; the shuttle _ with the 53-year-old biochemist aboard _ is to land Thursday.
Neither Michael nor his sisters intend to follow mom into orbit, he said. He spent the summer studying wolves in Minnesota and is pursuing a degree in wildlife resource management.
