WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — The mother of a North Carolina college football player who was shot and killed after attending a party is suing the school where the party took place, saying officials were negligent and had inadequate security.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Jemel Dixon, the mother of Winston-Salem State University football player Najee Baker, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in federal court. Wake Forest University is among the defendants.

Dixon’s lawsuit says the events center where the party was held had experienced numerous problems requiring police intervention. It also said school officials ignored a report calling for university police to provide equal security at all student events and leaving event management to students.

The school declined comment, citing pending litigation.

Baker was killed in January 2018. Three people were arrested in the case.
