Massive new meat market will debut Monday at Blanco-West Ave.
It’s a great time to be a carnivore in San Antonio.
Wiatrek’s Meat Market, which has been in business in Poth for more than 45 years, is opening the doors to its second location at 8519 Blanco Road, at the corner of West Avenue, at 12 p.m. Monday. The nearly 5,000 square-foot facility on the North Side will be like a carnivore cathedral, outfitted with more than 60 feet of meat counter space.
“Come Monday, all of these cases will be filled with product, and we’ll hit the ground running,” said co-owner Carter Ray, who will run the market and act as one of three onsite butchers.
Customers will be able to buy pre-cut meats or they can request their own cuts and watch the butchery process through a series of large windows that look into the cutting room.
“Whatever the customer asks for, we should have the means to do it,” Ray said.
Wiatrek’s has its own state-inspected processing facility in Poth, and Ray said that animals will be transported daily from there to San Antonio. There will also be a frozen area where sausages and other items that can be stored for longer periods of time. Wiatrek’s has also outfitted the interior with lots of shelving space that will carry a variety of Texas-based food products.
Monday’s opening will be the second specialty meat market to open in San Antonio in as many weeks. The Smoke Shack Meat Market, located at 3710 Broadway, had its first day of business was Sunday.
