Waverly holds off stubborn Fairland, 41-27
WAVERLY, Ohio — Fairland played catch-up all night long before the Waverly Tigers held on for a 41-27 victory.
Michael Stittbroke loose for a long gain to the Waverly 1-yard line and Fairland quarterback Joel Lambiotte got into the end zone on a short run that kept the Dragons within 34-21 with 4:45 remaining.
Fairland’s attempt to reduce a 28-14 deficit late in the third ended on a fourth-down incompletion from the Waverly 14.
Ethan Brooker’s 5-yard scoring run for Waverly (4-0) padded the lead to 34-14 at 9:26 of the fourth period.
Payton Shoemaker’s 5-yard touchdown run with 1:12 to go in the first half staked Waverly to a two-touchdown lead at 28-14.
Waverly bolted to an early 14-0 lead on a pair of Haydn Shanks touchdown passes before Fairland got on track.
Fairland (2-2) had two possessions in Waverly territory and got nothing, but on the Dragons’ third trip into the Tigers’ end of the field quarterback Lambiotte hooked up with Gavin Hunt for a 35-yard TD pass that pulled the Dragons within 14-7. Fairland’s touchdown came on the first play following a Brennan West interception of a Waverly pass.
Waverly moved downfield quickly and Shanks tossed a short scoring pass to Will Futhey for a 21-7 edge.
Lambiotte directed another venture across the 50-yard line before throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass to West. Alec Bruce kicked the extra point and Waverly’s lead was 21-14 at 4:13 of the second quarter.
