NYC Gas Explosion Injures Three

October 8, 1998

YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) _ A gas explosion at an apartment building injured three people Wednesday and forced the evacuation of dozens of residents, fire officials said.

The explosion shortly after 9:30 p.m. on the top floor of the four-story brick building buckled walls, causing bricks to fall, said Battalion Chief Michael Obalde of the Yonkers Fire Department.

Windows on the top floors of the building near the Hudson River were blown out. Witnesses reported hearing the blast from 2 miles away, police said.

City building inspectors condemned the building, Obalde said.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. The injured, whose names and ages were not available, were treated at hospitals for minor injuries and released.

About 29 people from nearby residences and the eight apartments in the damaged building were evacuated. The Red Cross of Greater New York was placing residents at hotels in the city just north of New York.
