Ekaterina Yurlova takes gold in the women’s individual 15k
KONTIOLAHTI, Finland (AP) — Ekaterina Yurlova was crowned world champion Wednesday after victory in the women’s 15k individual race at the Biathlon World Championships.
The Russian finished in 41 minutes, 32.2 seconds, a clear 23.2 seconds ahead of second-placed Gabriella Soukalova.
“Maybe the thing was a bit like a mystery because from the first loop I felt so easy, I just wanted to race and shoot, and now I have this result,” Yurlova said. “In the shooting I was a bit worried about the standing, because sometimes it is difficult for me, but now I am happy with my standing too.” Yurlova added.
Soukalova of the Czech Republic clocked 41 minutes, 55.4 seconds to take silver ahead of home favorite Kaisa Makarainen.
Makarainen had two penalties and was 24.4 seconds adrift of Yurlova.
