Quake Rattles Southern Russia

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) _ An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6 shook the southern Russian republic of Dagestan on Friday. No casualties or damage were reported.

According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, the epicenter of the quake was between the remote, western towns of Kizil-Yurt and Dubki, near the border with Chechnya. Tremors were felt in the capital of Makhachkala.

A quake of magnitude 6 can cause severe damage.

The Caucasus Mountain region has occasional earthquakes, but most buildings are not reinforced against severe structural shocks and relatively small earthquakes often cause serious damage.
