School Closes After Student Shooting
NEWTOWN, Pa. (AP) _ A 14-year-old girl shot herself in the abdomen and collapsed near the door to her high school, authorities said Wednesday.
Bucks County District Attorney Michael Kane said no charges would be filed and the investigation was considered closed.
Kane said Starla Hendricks of Northampton Township, a freshman at Council Rock High School, had admitted to police that she shot herself. He said authorities had recovered the gun.
Miss Hendricks was found shot in the right side of the abdomen at 4 p.m. Tuesday and rushed to St. Mary Hospital in Langhorne, where she was in fair condition Wednesday, a spokeswoman said.
The school of 3,200 students was closed Wednesday at the request of police, said Charles Walter, Director of Business Affairs for the Council Rock School District.
Police had said they asked that the school be closed for safety reasons and because they wanted to search the building for the gun.
Assistant Principal David Yates said the girl was found by a custodian.
