Brew Dude toasts to winners of the New Year’s Eve Giveaway
A 23-year-old Bourbonnais woman is the grand prize winner of this year’s Brew Dude New Year’s Eve Giveaway, sponsored by Off Color Brewing in Chicago, Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis and DESTIHL Brewery in Normal.
Erica Forbes is one of the 15 people who submitted a “brew selfie,” or a self-portrait of themselves enjoying a beer, for a chance to win exclusive brewery prizes. She submitted her selfie with the caption, “There’s nothing better than enjoying a cold (and cheap) Bud Light at a Honky Tonk in Music City.”
The contest, announced by our Brew Dude, Joshua Riley, in the Dec. 8 edition of the Daily Journal, required beer lovers to submit a brew selfie to be eligible to win a grand prize, as well as to be entered into a random drawing to win smaller prizes.
A total of 316 votes were tallied during the two-and-a-half weeks the contest was open. Voters were able to vote up to once per day. On Dec. 26, the selfie with the most votes won the grand prize.
Forbes’ selfie received 105 votes, which was more than one-third of all votes.
For winning the grand prize, Forbes received a prize package of merchandise from Off Color, Sun King and DESTIHL. She also was gifted three drinks from the Goose Island Beer Company in Chicago. She received a can of Fathomless baltic porter-style beer from their Fulton & Wood series; a bottle of Noel, a Belgian-style dark ale; and a bottle of Parka Porter beer, which boasts “a mild caramel sweetness,” “chocolate notes” and a “velvety body.”
From Off Color, Forbes received an exclusive stemmed glass, canvas tote bag, heather red T-shirt and bottle opener, all of which sport the Off Color logo and brand designs of a mouse, grass and other illustrations. She also was gifted a $20 gift card to use at the brewery.
Off Color’s taproom, known as The Mousetrap, is open seven days per week at 1460 N. Kingsbury St., Chicago.
Their bottle shop, selling prepackaged drinks, is located inside their brewery at 3925 W. Dickens Ave., Chicago, and is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Their online store can be found at offcolorbrewing.com/store.
Sun King, whose original brewery and tasting room is at 135 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, awarded Forbes a $15 gift card.
Their all-ages brewery and tap room is at 7848 E. 96th St., Fishers, Ind. Sun King recently opened a spirits location at 351 Monon Blvd., Carmel, Ind. All Sun King locations are open seven days per week.
The brewery also sells their brews at local retailers in the Kankakee area.
In February, Sun King will reopen their Royal Order Membership to the public, which is an opportunity to receive exclusive drinks and merchandise from the brewery, as well as discounts at all Sun King locations, discounted tickets to Sun King-sponsored events and admission to an exclusive party for all members. Memberships can be purchased on a yearly basis. For more information, go to http://bit.ly/skbroyalorder or sunkingbrewing.com.
From DESTIHL, Forbes was gifted a decorative glass, a 32-ounce “crawler” koozie and a “slap can” koozie, inspired by 80s style slap bracelets, all featuring the brand logo and exclusive designs.
DESTIHL’s main office is located at 1200 Greenbriar Drive, Normal. The brewery also operates two Restaurant & Brew Works: 318 Towanda Ave., Normal; and 301 N. Neil St., Champaign. All locations are open seven days per week.
DESTIHL merchandise can be bought online at shopdestihl.com.
Overall, Forbes’ prizes totaled at an estimated retail value of $100.
Forbes, who is studying at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, entered the contest on a whim, she told the Daily Journal when she picked up her prizes at the Journal office Dec. 28.
The medical school student celebrated New Year’s Eve in Memphis, Tenn., with friends, so the Goose Island beers and brewery merchandise came in handy for the holiday.
Two smaller prize packages were awarded to two random winners, both totaling about $25.
John Veers, 71, of Kankakee, received a Sun King T-shirt, koozie and sticker, as well as a DESTIHL sticker.
Matt Thiesen, 46, of Bradley, was awarded a DESTIHL tote bag, press-on patch, sunglasses and sticker, plus a Sun King pin and koozie.
