1-year-old accidentally brings marijuana into Solon daycare

SOLON, Ohio -- The Solon prosecutor declined to bring criminal charges against the aunt of a 1-year-old child who mistakenly brought marijuana into her daycare.

Employees at Kindercare on Som Center Road said they initially mistook the bag of weed for the girl’s breakfast when they made the discovery about 1:40 p.m. Feb. 21. Police didn’t say whether they believe the girl ingested any of the drugs.

The girl brought the bag into the building after her aunt, her legal guardian, dropped her off at the facility. Teachers saw the bag when the girl got out of the car, but they thought it was her breakfast, police said.

The girl dropped the bag a short time later and another child picked it up, police said. The two children got into an argument, Solon police Lt. Joseph Alestock said.

When teachers saw the children fighting they realized what was inside of the bag and contacted the police, children services and the aunt, Alestock said.

Detectives spoke to the aunt who stated several times that the child did not have the bag prior to being dropped off at the daycare, Alestock said.

Investigators determined there was a lack of probable cause and no arrests were made, he said.

Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services is investigating the incident, Alestock said.
