Boys soccer: Phoenix put up six goals in season opening win
Senior midfielder/forward Lucas Martin assisted on four of Luther Prep’s six goals, with two each from seniors Alex Lawrence and Xander Heiman, in Thursday’s 6-0 boys soccer rout of visiting East Troy/Palmyra-Eagle.
“This team had a lot of moving parts today with many boys out with injuries and they played extremely well,” Luther Prep boys soccer coach Marty Pagel said. “For a lot of these boys, this was their first varsity ball and they played like seasoned veterans.”
Martin sent Lawrence in alone and he passed the ball past the keeper to open the scoring in the 26th minute. Heiman doubled the lead just before halftime when he converted after senior defender Joel Schewe’s through ball sent him in free.
Even through the visitors outshot the Phoenix, the hosts pulled away starting with Heiman finishing off Martin’s pinpoint cross in the 69th minute. Lawrence picked up his second tally in the 75th minute with an assist from junior midfielder Paul Frick.
In the 85th minute, Frick sniped one into the side netting off a feed from Martin, who set up senior midfielder Gideon Kroll for a long-range strike nearly three minutes later.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how they played game number one,” Pagel said. “The defense played lights out and the offense put up six with as many assists.”
Junior keeper Nate Hintze picked up the shutout in goal.
Luther Prep heads to the two-day Lake Country Lutheran Tournament starting Friday.
