Officials: Church building under construction collapses
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities in Providence say part of a church that was under construction collapsed over the weekend.
Fire officials responded to calls from the Providence Spanish Seventh-Day Adventist Church around 5 p.m. Sunday. Battalion Chief Brian Mahoney says the roof on the church’s addition collapsed.
The structure was empty at the time and no one was injured.
The cause is unclear. Mahoney says the building inspector and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on hand Sunday.
According to Pastor Nestor Ampar, the church raised $1.4 million to build the addition. He says cleanup will start this week.
