Trial set for man charged in 1974 Massachusetts slaying
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A 71-year-old Georgia man charged with killing a Massachusetts woman nearly 42 years ago is scheduled to face trial early next year.
The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1UcqDfX ) reports that on Thursday a judge scheduled Lonzo Guthrie’s murder trial to start Feb. 11.
The Austell, Georgia, man has pleaded not guilty to the February 1974 stabbing death of 21-year-old Eileen Ferro in her Shrewsbury home.
Ferro was found dead a day after Guthrie delivered furniture to the home.
Guthrie was linked to the killing when blood evidence from the scene matched a DNA sample he submitted because of a California rape conviction.
Guthrie’s lawyer says his client “absolutely” denies killing Ferro. The defense has filed a motion asking that Guthrie be allowed to submit evidence suggesting someone else committed the crime.
