Police release names of 2 victims in Holyoke crash
HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — Police have released the names of the two people who died in a New Year’s Day car crash in Holyoke.
Authorities tell WWLP-TV (http://bit.ly/1ZLG81o ) that 48-year-old Maria Calderon and 52-year-old Manuel Velez, both of Holyoke, were killed at about 4 a.m. Friday when the vehicle they were in was broad-sided by another vehicle that ran a stop sign.
Three other people in their vehicle were hurt and are expected to survive.
The driver of the car that struck them was also injured.
Sgt. Stephen Loftus says state police are still investigating, but it does not appear as if alcohol was involved. The driver, whose name has not been released, has been cited for running a stop sign, but has not been criminally charged.
