NYC mayor rules out Olympic bid

May 28, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ruled out making a bid to host the 2024 Olympics.

Alicia Glen, deputy mayor for housing and economic development, tells the Wall Street Journal the mayor made the decision after weighing the pros and cons of hosting the event.

De Blasio previously has expressed little interest in hosting the Olympics. But earlier this month, he said he would work with Gov. Andrew Cuomo if a bid was planned.

Cuomo’s office had confirmed it was looking at a proposal from Daniel Doctoroff, who led the city’s failed bid for the 2012 Games.

Glen says top officials feared an Olympic bid would distract from the mayor’s economic-development agenda.

The U.S. Olympic Committee is weighing whether to submit a bid for the 2024 Games. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Washington are among possible candidates.
