Dow Soars 100 in Opening Minutes

October 3, 1997

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are rising in early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 110 points. Gainers on the New York Stock Exchange hold an 8-1 lead over decliners. The Nasdaq Composite Index has gained 22 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index is ahead almost eleven points.

The stock market is getting its boost on good news from the Labor Department. The unemployment rate for September was the same as for August: 4.9 percent. Another 215,000 jobs were added last month. That’s far less growth in the labor markets than economists were forecasting, so it eases inflation worries.
