COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) — Police say a Maryland woman who was found dead in her backyard may have been killed by a pit bull that she adopted two weeks ago.

A Howard County police news release says a family member reported finding 64-year-old Robin Conway in her yard Monday, with her dog standing over her. The witness called 911 and tied the dog to a fence.

News outlets report emergency responders pronounced Conway dead. Police say the dog was still attached to the post and was barking and lunging on the leash. They say the dog was subdued by animal control officers and eventually euthanized. A necropsy will be performed to determine if the dog had rabies or any other medical issues.

A medical examiner will determine Conway's cause of death.
