Two University Students Slain on Rural Mississippi Road
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) _ Two Mississippi State University students out on a date were fatally shot today and dumped by the side of a rural road, authorities said.
The victims were found about four miles outside Starkville, the town about 100 miles northeast of Jackson where the school is located.
No arrests were made.
Orvel Musgrove, chief county medical examiner, said no weapon or vehicle was found, indicating it was a double murder rather than a murder-suicide.
Musgrove said Jon Stephen Steckler, 19, of Natchez died en route to Oktibbeha County Hospital following the shooting sometime after midnight. His girlfriend, Pamela Tiffany Miller, 22, of Jackson, was dead at the scene.
Autopsies were scheduled.
Virginia Wood, house mother for the Sigma Chi fraternity where Steckler lived, said he had left on a date Thursday night. ″Everyone here is devastated,″ Wood said. ″He was a fine boy.″
