Tulsa Police Find Abducted Child
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ A 3-year-old boy turned up safe Monday more than 24 hours after being abducted in what police said was a plot to scare a girl into recanting her testimony in an indecent-exposure case.
Police arrested Lamarr Raymond Dennis, 31, on suspicion of kidnapping for extortion. Police said Dennis masterminded the kidnapping to get his own 13-year-old daughter to withdraw her allegations against him.
Also arrested in the kidnapping were Larry Doby Berry, 21, Claudia Dawn Baldwin, 20, and Tiawana Maria Smith, 33. Police said Berry and Baldwin kidnapped the child from his bed, and Smith later helped watch him.
On Monday, a passer-by spotted the boy, Deandre Nathaniel Thomas, walking in a Tulsa neighborhood around 2:15 a.m. Deandre, who was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts when he was taken, was cold and wheezing with asthma but otherwise unharmed, and was reunited with his father.
Police said the boy was abducted from a Tulsa apartment where he lived with his father, the 13-year-old girl and the girl’s mother. The kidnappers threatened to kill the little boy if the 13-year-old did not recant her testimony against Dennis, Sgt. Wayne Allen said.
The two kidnappers told the family that Dennis owed them $30,000 and wouldn’t be able to repay it if he was sent to prison, police said.
Police would not release details of where the boy had been held or how he ended up wandering the neighborhood.
Dennis’ sentencing in the indecent exposure took place as scheduled Monday morning. He received a 20-year prison term.
