LOS ANGELES (AP) _ John Burkett has rolled five perfect games but never pitched one.

``I knew what was going on. It’s like throwing a 300 game,″ Burkett said after pitching no-hit ball for six innings Friday night and winding up with a two-hitter in the Florida Marlins’ 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Burkett, an avid bowler, retired his first 11 batters before walking Mike Piazza on a 3-2 pitch. He struck out seven and walked one, allowing his first hit when former San Francisco teammate Brett Butler singled up the middle leading off the seventh.

``When you get four or five in a row, you kind of realize you’ve got something going. But you never expect it to happen,″ Burkett said. ``I put a little cutter over the plate and he got a base hit. After that I just said, hey, get them out and win the game.″

Gary Sheffield homered twice for Florida, and Greg Colbrunn homered once. Raul Mondesi homered in the eighth for the Dodgers’ other hit.

Burkett didn’t allow an earned run over eight innings in his season debut against Pittsburgh, but gave up seven earned runs in 4 1-3 innings Sunday against the Giants.

``Nothing special,″ the Dodgers’ Delino DeShields said. ``We just couldn’t get anything going off him tonight.″

Sheffield, who had four homers this season, snapped Florida’s 18-inning scoreless streak with a first-inning homer off Ismael Valdes (0-1). He hit a solo homer in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

``We knew needed to do something offensively,″ Sheffield said. ``And I think that when I hit that first ball out, it made a stand. Everybody said, `Let’s go,′ and we responded to it. We got a good pitching performance and we played good defense.″

Colbrunn homered in the second off Valdes, who allowed seven hits in six innings.

Notes: Mondesi homered into the second deck just inside the left field pole. He became the fifth player in Dodger Stadium history to hit into the loge level. The others were: Dave Kingman (1976 and 1978), Dave Parker (1984), Nick Esasky (1987), and Frank Howard against the Yankees in the 1963 World Series. It was Sheffield’s eighth multihomer game. ... Quilvio Veras, last season’s NL stolen base leader, has been caught stealing in three of four attempts.
