Huskies Advance to Hockey East Final with OT Win Over BU
BOSTON -- Zach Solow scored at 15:44 of overtime to lift third-seeded Northeastern to a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Boston University in the semifinals of the 35th annual Hockey East Tournament Friday night at TD Garden.
The Huskies (26-10-1) advance to their third title game appearance and will play Boston College, which defeated UMass in the other semifinal contest Friday night, 3-0.
Solow’s 15th goal and his school-record sixth game-winner this season ended a hard-fought battle between the two Boston rivals.
Terriers goaltender Jake Oettinger made 42 saves, including 26 after the first 40 minutes. Northeastern’s Cayden Primeau stopped 29 as the Huskies won their program-record 26th game of the season, and their sixth in overtime.
After a scoreless opening period, the Terriers’ first shot of the second period was the game’s first goal, Ty Amonte’s eighth of the year on the power play at 7:39.
The Huskies tied it just 16 seconds into the third on freshman Tyler Madden’s 12th of the year.
Northeastern has now won four straight games and nine of its last 10. The Huskies also beat Boston University 2-1 in overtime in the Beanpot semifimals in February, before taking the title a week later.
