More Than 11 Tons of Marijuana Seized
HONOLULU (AP) _ More than 11 tons of marijuana from Thailand has been seized at a storage facility, the largest haul in the history of Hawaii, authorities said.
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested George Robello, 42, of Mililani, who had signed for the shipment. He was charged with distribution of a controlled substance.
The marijuana, estimated to be worth $23 million, arrived May 28, and Robello claimed it as kitchenware cargo for his Waianae import business, officials said.
He had been under 24-hour surveillance for one month after storing the container, officials said.
The marijuana was in 356 steel boxes that had been packed behind 11 boxes of kitchenware that filled a 40-foot shipping container, said Joseph Brzostowski, agent in charge of the DEA in Hawaii.
The container was on a ship that came from Thailand via Taiwan to Hawaii.
