Florence One Schools bus hit head-on in eastern Florence County

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Two adults and six children on a school bus escaped serious injury in a crash Wednesday afternoon.

The crash, which happened about 2:30 p.m., happened on St. Beulah Road near Sandwood Avenue when a bus that was letting a student off was hit head-on by a pickup truck.

The students on board the bus attend Lester Elementary and Rush Academy, according to a release from Florence One Schools.

A passenger in the pickup truck and the bus driver were transported by medic with Florence County EMS to a Florence area hospital.

The students were seen to at the scene by medics as well. Two of the students were released to their parents while four were loaded onto a second bus and taken home as requested by their parents, according to the release.

Windy Hill Fire Chief John DeLung said the bus driver grabbed a student who was getting off the bus and pulled them back into the safety of the bus prior to the crash.

The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
