Marvin Edward Zitek was born on Aug. 19, 1935, in Seward, to Edward and Anna (Krska) Zitek, and passed away on Feb. 4, 2019, in Seward, at the age of 83. Marvin’s sense of humor, helping hand, and warm smile will be missed by so many.

Marvin grew up on the family farm between Ulysses and Dwight. He attended Assumption Catholic School where he graduated with the class of 1953. After high school, Marvin enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard. He also worked construction at the same time. On Sept. 17, 1960, Marvin was united in marriage to Mary Lee Benes at Saint Vitus Catholic Church in Touhy, and to this union seven children were born. Marvin and Mary Lee farmed in the Ulysses area for the next 45 years. He enjoyed raising cattle, hogs, and all different kinds of farm animals. Marvin also loved his orchard. He liked to prove others wrong, showing them he could grow peach, apple, apricot and cherry trees. Upon his retirement, Marvin became bored and started driving trucks over the road for several years. He would come back to the farm and help when needed. His family was very important to him. He loved going to the grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities. Marvin was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He served on the co-op board, Ulysses Fire Department, and Dwight American Legion Post #110. In his younger years, he loved coaching little league baseball and he also enjoyed woodworking.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Zitek, of Seward; seven children: Denise Zitek of David City, Gary and wife Allison Zitek of Ulysses, Sandra and husband Paul Mueller of Seward, Linda and husband Dan Burke of Sidney, Karen Zitek of Lincoln, Ron and wife Tammie Zitek of Ulysses, Dan Zitek of Meriden, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Gene Zitek of Lincoln.
