Football | St. Charles holds off Triton, remains unbeaten
ST. CHARLES — Winless Triton went on the road to face undefeated St. Charles on Friday in a Southeast District, White Sub-District contest — and the Cobras gave the Saints all they wanted, with St. Charles finally prevailing 28-21.
Things couldn’t have started much worse for Triton. With the score 0-0 in the first quarter, Cobras quarterback Austin Melder fumbled and Drew Leistikow returned it 34 yards for a Saints touchdown.
The Cobras bounced back, with Melder throwing a 46-yard touchdown pass, then plunging in for a 2-yard touchdown run as Triton claimed a 14-8 lead.
Stewartville responded with a 25-yard touchdown run by Logan Wendt to tie the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
After St. Charles forced a Triton punt on the opening possession of the second half, Wendt dashed 72 yards for a TD. He would add a one-yard TD run later in the quarter to give the Saints a 28-14 lead.
Triton scored its final touchdown with seconds remaining in the game, but St. Charles recovered the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock.
Triton outgained St. Charles 290-238 and had 12 first downs, while St. Charles had 10. The Cobras, however, lost three fumbles.
Wendt had 177 yards on 21 carries.
St. Charles (4-0) hosts Lewiston-Altura next week, while Triton (0-4) is at Dover-Eyota.
