Dennis Dickman

Dennis A. Dickman, 80, of Nokomis, Fla., and previously of Herscher, passed away Saturday (Aug. 25, 2018) with his family at his side.

Cremation with graveside rites will be at a future date.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Dennis was born May 25, 1938, in Kankakee, the son of Anton and Freda Dickman.

He was a retired farmer.

Dennis served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

He married JoAnn Dickman on May 24, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Herscher.

She survives, of Nokomis, Fla., and previously of Herscher.

Also surviving are a son, Douglas (Jennifer) Dickman, of Platteville, Wis.; daughter, Debra (David) Kaiser, of Dayton, Ohio; six grandchildren, Brittany (Jeff) Harwood, of Orient, Ohio; Breanne (Jake) Lavin, of Mableton, Ga.; Sydney and Hailey Dickman, of Creston; and Alissah and Brady White, of Platteville, Wis.; and five great-grandchildren, Payson and Callen Harwood, of Orient, Ohio; and Danielle, Bekah and James Lavin, of Mableton, Ga.

Preceding him in death were an infant daughter; his parents; his in-laws, Fred and Elsie Boness; sisters, Phyllis Johnston and Lorraine Mueller; and brother, Wayne Dickman.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran in Herscher, serving on the church council and as council chairman, and a member of Lakeside Lutheran in Venice, Fla.

Dennis helped organize and served as the first vice president of the Kankakee County Corn Growers Association. He was a vendor for 17 years in the Kankakee Farmers’ Market and south Chicago suburbs with organic poultry and eggs. He loved farming and farmed for 60 years in the Herscher area.

He was a very devout Christian man. Dennis was devoted to his high school sweetheart, JoAnn, whom he married nearly 60 years ago; and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to travel. His wit and kindness never will be forgotten, his family said.

His military awards included being awarded the Expert Badge with mortar bar, Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar and Marksman Badge with pistol bar.
