UK summons Spanish ambassador in Gibraltar spat
LONDON (AP) — Britain has summoned the Spanish ambassador to explain why drivers faced long delays at the border between Spain and Gibraltar this week.
The Foreign Office says Ambassador Federico Trillo was called in as a result of Britain’s “serious concerns” about the delays.
Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire said Friday that people crossing the border were delayed for up to seven hours this week “as a result of wholly disproportionate checks introduced by the Spanish authorities on vehicles both leaving and entering Gibraltar.”
Spain has long laid claim to Gibraltar, a British overseas territory on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. The colony is the source of occasional diplomatic friction between the countries.
Spain’s ambassador was last summoned in November following what Britain said were incursions into its territorial waters.
