Lowell High Stung by Central, 40-0

LAWRENCE -- Central Catholic improved to 3-2 on the season with a 40-0 shelling of Lowell (1-4) Friday night.

Central ran up over 400 yards on offense while their defense forced three turnovers, 5 QB sacks and benefited from a safety on an end zone miscue.

Central Catholic took the opening kickoff and went 72 yards on 7 plays. Junior quarterback Jared Silverio went the final 7 yards for the score. Sophomore kicker Nick Mazzie toed the first of his 8 points on the night (5 conversion kicks and a field goal) for the 7-0 lead.

Holding Lowell to 3 downs and a punt the Raiders took over on a fair catch at their own 40. They took 7 plays -- 4 were pass completions by senior quarterback Aidan Gordon for 38 yards. The scoring pass went 16 yards down the left sideline to sophomore tight end Jermaine Wiggins, and the Mazzie kick made the score 14-0.

When Lowell fumbled on their next possession, the Raiders junior linebacker Dominic Pedi recovered the bouncing ball. Unable to move the Raiders punted back to Lowell.

The Red Raiders showed some offense on the legs of Brendan Tighe (9 carries for 47 yards on the night) and a sensational 38 yard pass from quarterback Aidan Foyle to Tighe at midfield. The Central defense stiffened and forced a punt that saw them begin the drive on their 35.

The score would come on a 1 yard run by quarterback Silverio, his second on the night. Mazzie’s kick made the score 21-0.

Central had one more first half possession and as the half came to a close, Mazzie kicked a 26 yard field goal and a 24-0 score at half.

Lowell took the second half kickoff and was moving toward midfield. Lowell would never cross midfield on the night, but came closest on their 47. The attempted pass by Aidan Foyle was tipped and intercepted by Raiders linebacker Christopher Jones.

When the ball was punted back to Lowell it went out of bounds at the Red Raiders 9. On the second play the ball was centered over the head of the quarterback and rolled through the end zone for a safety and a 26-0 score.

Central got the ball on a free kick and went 56 yards in 9 plays. This time senior running back Anthony Caggianelli -the leading rusher on the game with 79 yards on 12 carries-ran the final yard for the score.

Mazzie added the point for the 33-0 score.

On the ensuing kickoff the Lowell return runner fumbled the ball and the Raiders Kevin Higgins recovered this ball on the Lowell 20.

Junior halfback J J Mercuri ran 3 times for the 20 yards, the score coming on a one yard plunge. Mazzie added the conversion for the 40-0 final.

On the night Lowell was held to 105 yards. Quarterback Aidan Foyle completed 4 of 16 for 66 yards. Brendan Tighe had 3 catches for 63 yards. Tighe also led the rushing attack with 47 yards on 9 carries.

Central had two quarterbacks on the night. Jared Silverio completed 3 of 9 for 18 yards, and ran 5 times for 25 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Senior Raiders quarterback completed 6 of 12 for 80 yards and threw one scoring pass.

The Raiders had a stable of 9 running backs that had 278 yards on 37 carries.

Lowell returns to Memorial Stadium next Friday night to play Lawrence High at 7 p.m. Central Catholic travels to play at Methuen next Friday evening.
