Del Mar Gray Favored in Cup Classic

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Del Mar Gray, who has won stakes races in two of his last three starts, heads a field of seven entered in Saturday’s $250,000 Wells Fargo California Cup Classic at Santa Anita’s Oak Tree meeting.

The 1 1/4-mile Classic heads a lineup of 10 races exclusively for California-bred horses with purses totaling $1.275 million.

Del Mar Gray, a 4-year-old gelding trained by Bob Baffert, has won five of his 20 lifetime starts and finished second or third in nine others. In his last outing, he won the California Turf Championship Handicap at Bay Meadows.

Del Mar Gray, who has earned $326,386, will be ridden by Alex Solis, carry 118 pounds and break from the outside post.

Others entered in the 10th running of the race for 3-year-olds and up are Smoky Cinder, who will be ridden by Gary Stevens and is assigned 116 pounds; Bagshot, Chris Antley, 116; Prestigious Chief, Victor Espinoza, 114; Splendid Splinter, Kent Desormeaux, 113; Warm April, Chris McCarron, 112; and Lesters Boy, Frank Alvarado, 112.

Among the other races on the card are the $175,000 California Cup Mile for 3-year-olds and up and the $150,000 California Cup Sprint for 3-year-olds and up.

A field of 11 headed by Native Desert and Indiahoma is entered in the Mile, and a field of 10 led by Men’s Exclusive and Love That Red is entered in the Sprint.
