North Bend Central overwhelms Wayne in second half

January 11, 2019

NORTH BEND — Wayne senior Aaron Reynolds changed Thursday’s game when he rebounded a missed shot in the closing seconds of the first half, took a few steps, and threw up a three-quarters court prayer just before the buzzer.

But it was not in a way anyone would have predicted.

That’s because the excitement of the last-second basket didn’t translate into more positives for the Blue Devils.

“I think we got a little too overexcited at halftime,” Wayne coach Rob Sweetland said. “They came out and kind of took it to us.”

John Emanuel finished with a game-high 25 points, and Class C’s second-ranked North Bend Central equaled its first-half output when it outscored Wayne 26-1 in the third quarter on its way to a 58-39 victory in non-conference action Thursday night at Tiger Arena.

Don’t tell North Bend coach Jon Baehr that the win was any sort of statement.

“Wayne is a real quality team, and we knew it would be a tough game for us,” Baehr said. “The thing for us is continuing to get better. We don’t really worry about a statement win or this or that, just go out and get better and keep trying to improve. We did. We came out and played a fantastic third quarter.”

North Bend finished the night shooting 21 of 54 (38.9 percent) from the field. Emanuel had a huge game, hitting 9 of 13 shots inside the arc and 7 of 8 free throws on his way to 25 points. He was the only scorer in double figures for either team.

“We’re lucky to have a guy like John who can go out there and make plays when we need them,” Baehr said.

Kallan Herman and Marcus Fertig were the top Blue Devils with nine points each. Wayne’s two leading scorers on the season, Shea Sweetland and Tyrus Eischeid, were limited to a combined three points on 1 for 12 shooting. As a team, Wayne was just 12 of 39 (30.8 percent) from the field.

“That’s hard to overcome against a team like this,” coach Sweetland said. “You’ve got to learn how to play through those tough games and find a way to stay confident.”

Tanner Wietfeld got the second half started with a conventional 3-point play just 20 seconds in. Jaxon Wietfeld’s steal moments later led to a Ben Rolenc bucket, and Emanuel found Chase Ruzicka for a basket. Emanuel followed with a steal and 3-point play 22 seconds later for a 38-26 lead at the 5:17 mark. Breckin Peters turned an Emanuel pass into a baseline jumper to push the lead to 14 before Wayne got on the board with the second of two Fertig free throws.

But that’s all the Blue Devils would get in the entire quarter. Emanuel would score twice off offensive rebounds, and Cody Prohaska came off the bench to punctuate the quarter with a 3-pointer — the only one of the entire game for North Bend — with 25 seconds left.

“I don’t really know how that happens. Sometimes, things get to snowballing, and that snowball gets rolling downhill,” Baehr said. “We’ve got guys who make plays. … When we got rolling, they missed some shots, and we were able to take advantage of it.”

Wayne led 14-9 after a Trevor DeBoer free throw with 1:58 left in the first quarter. But North Bend scored seven-straight points in 49 seconds for a 20-17 lead with 6:33 until halftime. Late in the half, Reynolds rebounded a miss from Austin Endorf, drove past the lane and launched a desperation shot from the backcourt 3-point line that found the bottom of the net on the other side. That tied the game at 26 going into halftime.

“The kids were pretty excited about it,” coach Sweetland said. “Anytime you hit something at the buzzer like that, you get pretty excited. But in these kinds of games, you can’t get too high or too low. You want to save that kind of celebration after you win. We came out a little flat. They came out with that 26-1 run, Their kids responded to that shot by coming out and playing a little harder.”
