Child Injured, Man Killed in Elementary School Shooting
WASHINGTON (AP) _ A 4-year-old girl was critically wounded and a man killed Saturday when three men opened fire on a crowd at a football game at a Southeast Washington elementary school, police said
The shooting was one of four that occurred within a four-hour period - and within several blocks of each other - Saturday that left three men dead and a 12-year-old girl injured. Police could not say whether the shootings were related to one another or whether they involved gang activity.
″We believe that something is going on, but we are not able to say just what except that there is a total disregard for life,″ said police Lt. Beverly Alfred.
Launice Smith, 4, was in critical condition after the football game shooting at about 2:30 p.m. The unidentified man shot in the same incident was taken to another hospital, where he later died, police said.
A large group of area residents were watching a neighborhood football game at the elementary school when the three gunmen approached and opened fire, police said.
Later Saturday, a 12-year-old girl whose name was not released was critically wounded when she tried to run from three men who were shooting randomly from a car, police said.
The first fatal shooting occurred just before noon when an Deangelo Howard, 18, was shot to death in a wooded area.
The shooting at the school occurred at 2:30 p.m. And at about 3:30 p.m. police found a man, whose name has not been released, shot several times on a curb. He died later at a hospital.
